About Us

We are Sisters of Mercy in the Diocese of Mansa. We were founded by Archbishop James Spaita in 1977. Our charism is compassion from the compassionate heart of Jesus (Lk6:36). We are called be, in all we say, and do, living witnesses of God’s compassion for his people.

We are a Community of baptized Christian women, belonging to the Catholic Church. Of our own free will and yet in answer to an inner calling, we constitute a Religious family in the Church, approved by it, under the name of Sisters of Mercy or, in our native tongue, “Ba Mama wa Luse”.

We were founded in 1977 by The Rt. Rev. Bishop James Spaita, Bishop of Mansa Diocese in Zambia. In order to maintain our rightful identity and autonomy we preserve and maintain our charism and the traditions handed down to us by our Father Founder.

We form a Diocesan Religious Congregation and were approved under the Canonical authority and spiritual guidance of The Rt. Rev. Bishop A. A. Chisha of Mansa in the year 2000.

We desire to be specifically “Sisters of Mercy” because we wish to live as spiritual Sisters of our fellow believers, and as such we give expression of the Compassionate Heart of Christ.

Our Congregation is put under the protection of Mary, the Mother of God, our Lady of Mercy and Compassion. Appropriate and inspiring pictures of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and the Congregation’s traditional emblem shall be hung in our houses, so as to remind us of the spirit of compassion which shall characterize our everyday life.
